Dr. Dawson graduated from the University of Calgary in 1993 and did his Family Medicine Residency at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. After residency, he and his family moved to Big Stone Gap in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia. While in this small isolated community, he was the director of the Intermediate Care Unit of the hospital, cared for admitted patients on the medical floor, was the primary doctor for more than 100 patients in an extended care facility, and worked full- time as a family doctor.
After three years, Dr. Dawson moved to Bend, Oregon. He and his family lived in Bend for ten years. During this time, he maintained a full-time family medicine practice and active admitting privileges at the local hospital. He also did lectures on hypertension (high blood pressure) to other doctors. This lecture circuit soon had him flying around the United States.
In 2008, John and his family moved back to Canada and settled in Kelowna. In Kelowna, he has worked at a walk-in clinic and enjoyed some of the high level of acuity in medicine, but has missed the longitudinal care of doing family medicine. In June 2012, he joined Drs Ben and Lize Wiese at HealthWise Family Medicine Clinic to fulfill that desire.
Some interesting facts about John: He has been happily married since 1989, and he and his wife have two sons. As a young man, he did alpine ski racing and bicycle road racing. He still loves to snow ski and bicycle ride. Since he now lives in Kelowna, he has been learning to water ski as well.
